Eighteen of the Flåm Railway's twenty tunnels were cut by hand, roughly one metre a month, by crews working through the 1920s and 1930s. The line opened to steam traffic in 1940 and was electrified in 1944, climbing 863 metres in 20.2 kilometres — a gradient of one in eighteen along four-fifths of its length. That engineering underwrites the modern flam cruise excursions tour: a village of a few hundred people became reachable, then scheduled. Flåm lies at the head of Aurlandsfjord, an arm of the Sognefjord, which reaches 205 kilometres inland and drops 1,308 metres below sea level. Its neighbour, the Nærøyfjord, narrows to roughly 250 metres between walls that rise 1,400 metres. UNESCO inscribed both fjord systems on the World Heritage list in 2005, citing the scale of the ice that carved them. Glaciers did the work; meltwater still feeds the falls that streak the cliffs each summer. The valley floor was farmed long before it was photographed, with grain terraces where hotels now stand. The region's older architecture is timber. Undredal, six kilometres down the fjord, keeps a stave church consecrated in 1147 and seating about forty — the smallest still in use in Scandinavia. Borgund, east across the mountain, preserves a stave church raised around 1180, its gables carved with dragon heads, its frame joined without nails. Above the water, the Stegastein viewpoint, completed in 2006, cantilevers thirty metres out from a road 650 metres above Aurlandsfjord in laminated pine and glass. Flåm shore excursions and guided Flåm fjord tours — utflukter fra Flåm, in the local phrasing — are assembled from these fixed points, and have been since the first cruise liners began calling here in the 1930s. The village itself remains small: a few hundred residents, a railway terminus, a working quay at 5743 Aurland. Entry to the port area costs nothing, and the ships come anyway — Flåm now counts among the busiest cruise calls in western Norway, with well over a hundred arrivals in a season. What sustains flam cruise excursions tours is compression. Fjord, waterfall, hill farm and glacier-cut wall all sit within an hour of the pier, and the country's most photographed railway ends at the same water where its narrowest World Heritage fjord begins. Few places in Europe put so much geology inside so short a walk.
